Below is a list of information on interests, socail and sports events in and around the Welwyn Parish:
Welwyn has been twinned with Champagne-sur-Oise near Paris since 1973, and has a thriving twinning association. Regular events, ranging from wine tastings, illustrated talks, quizzes etc are held, usually at the Civic Centre on Friday or Saturday evenings. Every year in the Spring there is either a visit to Champagne or the 'Champagners' are entertained here. Danesbury Residents’ Association (DRA).
The Danesbury Residents’ Association (DRA) has represented the 200 households on the Danesbury Estate since 1982. The Committee meets four times a year with a biennial General Meeting. The DRA presents ‘Welcome’ information packs to all new residents, and manages a Neighbourhood Watch scheme within the Welwyn West Ward. On behalf of residents the DRA frequently draws the attention of the authorities to issues which impact upon not just the Danesbury Estate, but upon wider aspects of village life in Welwyn too. We do this through regular contact with Parish Councillors, and at Borough and County levels too.
The Danesbury Local Nature Reserve is on our doorstep, and the DRA keeps a close ‘protecting and conserving’ interest in the Reserve, which is owned by the Borough Council. Our team of active volunteers (Friends of Danesbury), meet with the Borough Council’s Ranger on the third Thursday each month and work on path and bramble clearance. In the year 2000 the DRA ran a Millennium Project to install replacement park-land trees, and repeated the exercise in 2002 to commemorate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Further trees continue to be planted by DRA volunteers and the volunteer group build cattle guards and place commemorative plaques, paid for by the DRA which identify the botanical name of each tree.
